Statistically it is currently more “normal” to be pre-diabetic or diabetic than not. This coincides with a host of complications which fall under the umbrella of Metabolic Syndrome (MetSyn), including obesity, insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Many of these factors can be controlled with lifestyle modifications such as diet or exercise. These are broad suggestions which can be daunting for someone seeking to make changes.
Take a step back and think about benefits which draw you toward employment (outside of a paycheck). Things such as retirement plans, vacation time and maternity leave often lead the way. These things are undoubtedly important to you. While these absolutely are valuable components of your career, they really have no benefit to your present wellness. Wellness programs should be integral to the recruitment package of any employer, yet sadly it often includes a fridge stocked with sugar-laden energy drinks and a pantry stocked with candy. Over time, this translates to lost employment time and doctor’s visits – where employer and employee are both losers.
Wellness programs help employees make these daunting changes so over time they become the new norm. Behavior modifications lead to lower health risks, which means less chronic disease, while ultimately yielding lower health care costs and less time lost from work. The most comprehensive study to date looking at the financial impact of corporate wellness programs was done in 2001 and showed that every $1 spent on a nutrition program resulted in a $3.27 company saving due to reduced healthcare costs 1 . In addition, employees with poor eating habits and lack of exercise correlates to 2-3 times more loss of workdays. These factors can be rectified through proper coaching so both employer and employee win!
I have designed corporate gyms from scratch and trained employees in the convenience of their own workplace.
