Why Keto?
As a scientific researcher and coach, I want to ensure I align your individual ‘why’ with a low-carbohydrate/ketogenic diet. Although I believe a vast quantity of us would reap substantial health benefits from at least a minor commitment to this way of eating (as evidenced by the fact it is more normal as an American to be pre-diabetic or diabetic than not!), I wouldn’t press this lifestyle as a blanket statement on everyone. Also make note of my word-choices in “eating” and “lifestyle”. This is not a fad diet, but rather has extensive and expansive research in myriad of disease states ranging from epilepsy to obesity and diabetes, to improvements in body composition, athletic performance, and even cognitive perks in military personnel.
Most importantly and often overlooked, the metabolic machinery of ketosis lies inherently in our evolutionary fabric as human beings. Ketosis is how humans survived for many thousands of years before modern agriculture came along. It seems a little naïve to not draw parallels between the alarming rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes and our current carbohydrate consumption as a nation.
Glucose (carbohydrate) is often referred to as the “preferred” fuel source of our bodies, and I struggle with this descriptor. Sure, if glucose is present our bodies will use it, but in a world where obesity continues to run rampant, this (along with diabetes) suggests an improperly functioning metabolism – specifically the inability to properly metabolize carbohydrate. If you lost your car keys, could I just let you borrow mine? Ketones (mostly beta hydroxybutyrate) which are the products of ketogenesis happily feed the body, and most importantly can cross the highly guarded blood brain barrier to fuel your brain. This has been shown in the scientific literature for decades.
Years of a sedentary lifestyle coupled with predominantly carbohydrate intake is an all-out atrophy-attack on our body’s ability to respond to insulin. This means over time it will take more and more insulin production to respond to the same amount of glucose floating around in your blood. Insulin loses its ability to keep up, and elevated blood sugar is quite literally thicker (think sludge). I can’t picture a scenario where sludge is a good thing.
Understanding your ‘why’ is crucial because this illuminates the path for the personalized relationship and daily communication I have with my clients. I am so confident in the research and benefits of a low-carbohydrate lifestyle that I offer a complimentary call to answer any preliminary questions and better understand where you are coming from and where you wish to go.
Once we agree this will help you move toward your goals, we’ll schedule a 60-minute consultation via phone or Zoom to establish your specific plan of action for this rather drastic shift in nutritional habits. After you are set up for success, you and I will have daily correspondence via text for the following month to be sure things are going smoothly. You are free to communicate as much or little as you need, be it recipe ideas, reading food labels, grocery lists, or even how to navigate dining out.
